Our Story
For Jesus Through Mary
Our Spiritual Foundation
Rooted in the Franciscan tradition and inspired by the Gospel, the Seraphic Sisters dedicate their lives to Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Through prayer, surrender to God’s will, and reliance on His grace, they seek a deep personal union with Him.
At the center of their spirituality is the Eucharist, nourished daily through Mass, adoration, the Liturgy of the Hours, meditation, spiritual reading, and the Holy Rosary.
A special devotion to Mary, honored as Our Lady of Sorrows, shapes their identity and mission. Through her example of humility, obedience, and faithful love, the Sisters learn to walk closely with Christ, especially in His suffering.
Faithful to their motto, “All for Jesus through the sorrowful Heart of Mary,” they strive to be instruments of God’s mercy in the world.
Joy Is Being Franciscan
Living the Gospel with Simplicity
Following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi, the Sisters embrace a life of joy, humility, and simplicity. Through prayer and community life, they grow together in faith while seeking the fullness of God’s infinite love.
They recognize the face of Christ in every person, especially the poor, sick, elderly, and abandoned, and seek to bring hope to places where God may feel forgotten.
Their vocation is one of shared joy. They live the Gospel openly and invite others into deeper faith, trust, and relationship with Christ.
Serving Body and Spirit
Compassion in Action
The Seraphic Sisters share their lives with those most in need, offering both practical care and spiritual presence.
Their nursing homes are more than healthcare facilities. They are true homes, fostering a warm, family-like atmosphere that nurtures both body and soul.
In addition to nursing care, the Sisters welcome individuals and groups seeking spiritual renewal. Their retreat spaces provide peaceful settings for silence, prayer, and reconnection with God.
A Brief History
Humble Beginnings, Enduring Mission
1881
A Congregation
Is Born
Founded in Poland amid religious persecution, the Daughters of Our Lady of Sorrows, later known as the Seraphic Sisters, were established by Father Honorat Koźmiński and Mother Małgorzata Łucja Szewczyk. Rooted in the Franciscan spirit, they began serving the poor, homeless, and forgotten, becoming a beacon of faith and compassion. Today, their mission continues across Europe, Africa, South America, and the United States.
1968
Arrival and Early Challenges
in Chicago
The story of our mission in America began with Sister Alphonsa Bobek. Following an invitation from her family in Chicago, she departed Poland on a ten-day voyage across the Atlantic. After arriving in Canada on April 1, 1968, she traveled to Chicago. For over two years, Sister Alphonsa dedicated herself to the care of others, serving patients in their nursing home and laying the groundwork for the sisters who would follow.
1970
Arrival in
Texas
On November 24, two Sisters, Sr. Alphonsa and Sr. Helen, arrived in Texas at Rev. Kolton’s invitation. Soon after, Mother General Sr. Zbigniewa Kaczmarczyk formally established the Congregation’s mission, laying the foundation for the Sisters’ growing ministry in the region.
1976
Nursing Homes
Become Their Own
After years of service in San Antonio, the Sisters purchased their first nursing home, along with another in Kenedy, Texas. Renamed St. Francis Nursing Home and John Paul II Nursing Home, these facilities continue to reflect their Franciscan commitment to compassionate care and humble service.
